Eventhough there are many Shiva Temples in India and also in some other parts of the world, Temples in Tamilnadu have special significance. These Shiva Temples, glorified in Tamil Tevaram hymns, are referred as Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalangal. These Shiva Temples have been in existence for more than 1000 years because reference to these temples are found in Tevaram Hymns which were composed and authored by the 3 Nayanamar viz., Thirunavukarasar, Sambandar and Sundarar who lived between 7th and 9th century A.D. These hymns throw more light on Tamilnadu Temples, its art treasures, culture, civilization etc.
Chennai, the capital city of Tamilnadu is the gateway to the state. Many International Airlines touch Chennai International Airport and operate regular filights in and out of Chennai. Air India, Indian Airlines, British Aiways, Singapore Airlines, Srilanka Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Lufthansa, Gulf Air, Saudi Airlines are some of the airlines that operate flights to Chennai.
Chennai Domestic Airport connects Tamilnadu with other parts of India.There are regular flights from and to New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other important places within India. Trichy, Coimbatore, Salem are other cities in Tamilnadu which have airports.
Out of the 274 temples which were glorified in the Tevaram Hymns sung by the Nayanmars, 264 temples or Shivastalams are located in Tamilnadu (including Pondicherry). Even out of these 264 temples, a majority of them (190) are located in the erstwhile Chola Naadu and are situated on the north side (63) and south side (127) of river Cauvery. 14 Shivastalams are located in what is classified as Pandiya Naadu and 7 Shivastalams are located in Kongu Naadu. Tondai Naadu boasts of 31 Shivastalams and Nadu Naadu boasts of the remaining 22 Shivasthalams.
