According to the legend, during the great deluge (Pralayam) of the earth, the flood waters did not enter this particular place and branched off. Hence this Sthalam is known as Tirupurambayam. This sthalam is one of the 24 important places of worship for Dakshinamurthy.

The legend also tells the story of a girl devotee of God Shiva by name Ratnavalli whose marriage was fixed with a bridegroom by name Dhanaguptan. Unfortunately on the date of the marriage, the bridegroom Dhanaguptan dies of a snake bite. The bride Ratnavalli, being an ardent devotee of God Shiva, prayed to God Shiva to give the life back to her would be husband Dhanaguptan. Shiva was very pleased with the request of his devotee and Dhanaguptan woke up from the death bed as if nothing had happened to him. God Shiva later on went to Madurai to testify as a witness and confirmed that the marriage of these two people was indeed fixed earlier. Because the God testified as a witness, he is known as Satchi Natheswarar.
