According to legend, it is believed that the Pancha Paandavas of Mahabharatham installed 5 Sivalingams at this Sthalam and worshipped God Shiva afer they escaped from the poison pond (Natchupoigai). As such, Lord Shiva is seen here in 5 forms as 1. Padikkarai Nayagar, 2. Neelakandesar, 3. Muktheesar, 4. Paramesar and 5. Magadeesar. Lord Brahma is also believed to have worshipped Shiva here.
